LAVER’S NINTH
Dutchman outplayed (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK. The amazing Australian, R. Laver, swept to his ninth consecutive victory in the tennis champions classic on Saturday, by eliminating the Dutch professional, T. Okker, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3, Associated Press reported. Laver’s victory brought his total winnings in the series that began on January 2 to $90,000.
A sweep of the entire series would bring Laver $170,000 —and if Okker’s bewilderment was any criteria, Laver may very well be putting that figure in his bank account
“I have never played a better player and never saw anything like Laver,” Okker said afterwards. He had been shaking his head in disbelief throughout the match. “He was everywhere and did whatever he wanted to do. I couldn’t believe the shots he was making. When I thought I had hit some winners, he made losers out of them.”
In a qualifying match, R. Emerson (Australia) eliminated R. Taylor (Britain), 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 7-5. In the final set Emerson won seven successive points, finishing with an ace.
