Monowai A wins softball title
The powerful Monowai A team made certain of winning the Canterbury women’s senior sofV ball title for yet another year when it beat Western Suburbs comfortably on Saturday. With only one more.round to be played, Monowai A is in an unbeatable position, and the chief interest next Saturday will be the struggle for second place.
There was considerable excitement on Saturday when* Spreydon produced an inspired last innings rally—which brought six runs with one batter out—to snatch a one-run victory from Christchurch West, while Vanguard held on desperately to a slender lead to beat Monowai B. Results:— Spreydon 9, Christchurch West Vanguard 6, Monowai • 1. Monowai A 11, Western Suburbs 6. Spreydon v. West Victory seemed certain for West until Spreydon unleashed its amazing last-innings rally. The side was trailing, 3-8, before its last turn at bat, but M. Lee started Spreydon’s recovery by hitting a home. A. Caddie emulated her feat, scoring D. Marsh and B. Hawthorne as well, and then with only one batter
dismissed J. Jackson scored on a passed ball to make the score 8-8. A drive to right field by J. Mayhew brought H. Thyne home from third base to give Spreydon a win with two batters in hand. West’s most prominent batters were J. Patterson and M. Aiderson. Vanguard v. Monowai B A fielding collapse by Monowai B in the third Innings was the chief factor contributing to its defeat. Its fumbling at this stage enabled Vanguard to score four runs, and although Monowai scored two runs on overthrows in the sixth innings, Vanguard still had a run in hand at the finish. Monowai A v. Wastem Suburbs Western Suburbs failed to master the accurate pitching of B. Makinson, and with only two errors being committed by Monowai in the field, Western did not look like scoring. Monowai, on the other hand, batted confidently, scoring 11 runs to force a five-innings closure. N. Beale and B. Turbott both hit home runs in the third innings, and aggressive efforts by C. Brown, Makinson. Turbott, A. Phillips, and J. t Moher produced six runs in the fourth innings. V. Gage was always alert in, the field for Western Suburbs.)
