New French lesson
Even six yean of learning French at a New Zealand school may not equip a person to converse freely in French with a Frenchman. This is the lesson that dozens of Christchurch citizens learned at the week-end after trying to communicate with memben from the French frigate, the Amiral Charner. At parties, at public ban, at dances, in restaurants, and in the streets, a group of people could often be seen clustered around one or two French sailors, only about six of whom were able to speak good English, according to one of the bilingual sailors. Hundreds of citizens took the opportunity of inspecting the ship when it was opened to the public for several hours yesterday.
