Woman racing owner dies

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. A prominent racing owner for many years, Mrs C. McGregor, died in Auckland on Thursday. During her association with racing, which lasted more than 40 years, she raced such horses as Second Earl and Earldom. Mrs McGregor’s racing in* terests began with pacers Gold Dredge was a good winner for her in the 1930s K and Bronze Queen won several races. In the 19405, Gold Strand, a son of Gold Dredge, was a useful winner for Mrs McGregor. Gold Dredge and Bronze Queen were trained by W. F. Clifton, at Takanini. He also trained her team of gallopers when she became interested in thoroughbreds. Mrs McGregor’s best galloper was Second Earl, which Clifton prepared with L. Parkes. Second Earl became New Zealand’s top two-year-old. The horse was campaigned successfully in Australia, where he won the Doomben Ten Thousand and the A.J.C. George Main Stakes in which he beat Tulloch. Second Earl has since become a successful sire. Another horse to race prominently in Mrs McGregor’s colours was Earldom, which won the Herries Memorial, and, in an Australian campaign, ran fourth Ln the Melbourne Cup. Mrs

McGregor followed the progress of her horses keenly and travelled to Australia to watch them race. Other horses she raced in New Zealand Included Palustre, Pete Gregor, Sanfarian. French Echo, and Mac’s Empire. Pharion, trained by W. J Worrall, waa one of her more recent successful horses. He won several races in the north and two in Australia. Mrs McGregor waa prominent In the hotel trade for many years and bad been licensee of several hotels. Falling health caused her to take a less active role In racing over the last year or two. Mrs McGregor is survived by her daughter, Mrs N. F. Wallace, of Auckland.
