Russian music
Long recognised as one of Russia’s leading composers, Dmitri Shostakovich has now written 14 symphonies. Four of them are heard and seen in rehearsal in a documentary made in Russia to mark the composer’s sixtieth birthday. The life and work of Shostakovich are studied in the film, which will screen from CHTV3 on Sunday evening. The first, fifth, seventh (Leningrad) and thirteenth symphonies are heard, the conductor being Maxim Shostakovich, son of the composer, and one of the outstanding of the younger generation of Russian conductors.
