Coal report ‘premature’

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 5. Reports that the Japanese Steel company of Marubenilida was negotiating to buy a million tons of Westport coal a year for 10 years were described today by the Minister of Industries and Commerce and of Mines (Mr Shelton) as “somewat premature.” .

“As I said on August 25,” said Mr Shelton, “the Government has set up ar, interdepartmental committee of officials to investigate, coordinate, and recommend on major developments involving the sales and use of West Coast resources. “A number of overseas companies, including other Japanese interests, have shown an active interest in purchasing West Coast coal, and the Government hopes that satisfactory terms of sale can be concluded at some future time.” Mr Shelton confirmed that Marubeni-lido had “actively expressed strong interest” in buying coal.
