HOCKEY’S NO. 1 PLAYER

The University inside-right, J. H. Christensen, who was captain last season of the successful Canterbury hockey team, as well as leading his club to its fourth successive senior championship, has been selected as the “sportsman of the year” for 1970 by the Canterury Hockey Supporters’ Club. ( This honour is accompanied by a trophy, which has been given by Mr W. H. Down, a former secretary for several decades of the New Zealand association and a present member of that body. It will be the first occasion that an award has been made. Christensen represented New Zealand at the 1968 Olympic Games and played three tests against Australia towards the end of the 1970 season. Mr R. A. Milne, president of the supporters’ club, said that the selection is based upon the player’s ability, his standard of sportsmanship, and the contribution generally which he makes towards the progress, development and popularity of hockey. Christensen became captain of the Canterbury team 1 after the departure of S. G. Maister, the Rhodes Scholar, for Oxford University in 4969, and his leadership has been firm, astute and successful.
