“AFFRONT TO U.N.”

(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 3. The proposed appearance of an all-white South African life-saving team in New Zealand was an affront to the United Nations, said, the secretary of the New Zealand Race Relations Council (Mr T. O. Newnham) today.

In a letter to the Prime Minister (Sir Keith Holyoake), Mr Newnham said that the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Association’s action also established a further New Zealand involvement with apartheid sport. “This action can only be regarded as an affront to the United Nations and to all people everywhere who are concerned with racial equality, particularly as it occurs at the very time when the Government and people of New Zealand are marking International Year to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination,” he said.
