U.S. CHINA POLICY

Washington conference (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Feb. 5. The policy of the United States towards China, already under broad review is being given a two-day airing by the Congress, and scholars and journalists today. The Fund for New Priorities in America, a private group, is sponsoring the conference.

The United States National Security Council is now considering future policy towards Peking. One Government study deals with United Nations representation and the question of how Formosa can best retain its membership in the General President’s Comment Another study deals with U.S. recognition of Peking. No decisions have been reached on either study, but in a little noticed comment, President Nixon told a news conference on December 10 that one of the reasons the United States should press ahead with the supersonic transport plane was that it would bring not only Japan but China, in the last third of the century, three hours from the West Coast of the United States.

Later, President Nixon said that there were no plans to change American policy on the admission of China into the United Nations. However, America would continue the initiative he had begun, an initiative of relaxing trade restrictions and travel restrictions, and attempting to open channels of communications with Communist China, he added. “Looking along toward the future, we must have some communication and eventually relations with communist China,” President Nixon said.
