Some confidence returns
Confidence returned in small but sustained measure to Australian stock exchanges yesterday. Thursday’s shake-out seems to have abated and although stocks did not climb back to last Tuesday and Wednesday’s levels, they did firm on last night’s close. Trading was light and enthusiasm was limited, but both heavy-weights and speculatives tended to firm.
Recent “flyers” Trendex and North West Oil and Minerals improved slightly, but Devex and Glomex were both lower. Hamersley recorded one of the best gains for the heavy-weights with a 60c rise to 520. C.R.A. was 30c higher at 1140 c, while Great Boulder Peko and M.I.M. made worthwhile improvements. Industrials were quiet but markedly firmer. B.H.P. put on 65c to close at 1325 c. C.S.R. rose 20c to 600 c and Thiess recovered its recent loss of 110 c to close at 380 c. SYDNEY Sales.—Ansett, 69; A.W.A., 130; Ass. Sec., 182; A.G. Corp., 190; A.N.1.. 92; N.S.W., 600; 81.
