WOODEND HOTEL

Start on new building

Work has started on a new, single-storey, concreteblock building to replace the Royal Hotel, Woodend. The new building, estimated to cost about $140,000 and to be finished by May, is at the rear of the present beer garden. The hotel owner, Mr K. Fowke, said that the old hotel, a wooden structure, had been a landmark at Woodend for almost 100 years.

The old building will be demolished. The new one will tie in with a motel block and swimming pool built a few years ago. The Royal Hotel had a permanent licence, Mr Fowke said. The substantial improvements were not being made because of any requirement of the Licensing Control Commission. “The new building is designed to link with the new motorway, and the better facilities are being provided to cater more adequately for the needs of the district and to a standard at least equal to the best available in Christchurch,” he said.

The new hotel is being built by Williams Construction (Canterbury), Ltd.
