Some freight rates dearer

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 5. The Anchor Shipping Company, which runs coastal services between Westland and Onehunga, as well as other North Island ports, will increase its freight rates by about 10 per cent from February 15. The general manager (Mr A. K. Gellatly) said the adjustment would be made “with much regret.” “The increases, which will vary according to different trades and various commodities carried, are an absolute necessity to cope with increasing costs,” Mr Gellatly said.

He said the company was acutely aware of efforts to restrain the wage spiral, and that employers should lead the way in stabilising prices. The increases would be kept as low as was economically possible. “The increases are required simply as a matter of survival in some of the company’s coastal trading,” said Mr Gellatly.
