“Loitering” in the Square

Sir, —In the last few weeks we have been completing a photographic essay on aspects of Cathedral Square. From time to time we have noted that seemingly peaceful groups of motor-cyclists and teenagers in the region of the Godley statue have been told by the police to “move on.” This seems to us to be an unnecessary source of ill feeling between members of the police force and the younger generation. We question whether past incidents in the Square necessitate this fostering of discontent.—Yours, etc., J. AITKEN. C. WOHLERT. January 19, 1971. [Chief Superintendent G. Tait replies: “Police action in the Square is not discriminatory, but is in compliance with statutory requirements.”]
