Pays its way at 70
The only public transport system in West Germany to run without a deficit is Wuppertal’s suspension railway—the only one of its type in the world. It will be 70 years old on March 1. Ever since its inauguration by the Emperor in 1901, this technical wonder—it has run more than f!0
million kilometres and needed practically no repairs—has transported about one billion persons over its 13.3 kilometres. The train left its tracks only once (December 1970). By the year 2000, the “backbone of inter-urban traffic” in Wuppertal (412,000 inhabitants) will be changed into a ghost
train. A computer will direct the new trains which will run without driver or conductor. The steel frame and the 18 stations suspended from it will be painted pop • style and gardens are meant to embellish the view. For 75 marks, anybody can rent a train for a private ,4. trip around the city.
