RANDOM REMINDER
IDENTIFICATION
The recent death of Field-Marshal Slim, one of the Commonwealth’s most famous and unconventional military personalities, has reminded a correspondent not only of Sir William Slim’s excellent book, “Unofficial History,” but also of an incident during his period as Governor-General of Australia. It was during a Royal visit by Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of
Edinburgh, and the particular function to which our reader referred was an outdoors one of some kind. Tradition demanded that the GovernorGeneral should wear his dress uniform and insignia, and there is no doubt at all that the resultant effect was impressive. But it was a very hot day and the Governor-General felt an urgent demand for a cold drink. Choosing a moment
when he knew he would not be missed, he slipped away and went to the bar, which was without any other customers. The barman was polishing some glasses and was clearly overcome when he saw this resplendent figure approaching, so overcome that the best he could say was “God Almighty!” “No” was the reply. "Slim, Governor-General!”
