(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 6. The extermination of goats on Macauley Island in the ;Kermadecs, has led to a most i striking recovery of vegetation, according to New Zealand scientists who have returned to Auckland. Rare forms of bird life ,were discovered on two ' islands. The group of eight scient:ists spent 10 days on MacauI ley Island. Mr B. D. Bell, a senior conservation officer in the Internal Affairs Department, I said that only 18 goats apparently survived a slaughter programme four years ago. Formerly bare areas of the island were now covered by grass, and many species of vegetation previously restricted in inaccessible cliff ledges, had invaded the island’s main plateau.
