RACING Race record possible at Avondale today

“The Press” Special Service

AUCKLAND. If favourable conditions continue, it might take a race record to win the Avondale Stakes at the Avondale Jockey Club’s summer meeting this afternoon. The best time for the five-furlong course at Avondale has been Imin. Allowed good going, Sheralee and Adelphi are two candidates which could well go faster.

Adelphi won over five furlongs on Saturday in 59 4-ssec. Sheralee has raced twice over the same distance, in the Karitane Handicap and Wellesley Stakes, at Trentham in October.

Both races were easy wins for Eheralee, but a very soft track »each time precluded even the possibility of a fast time, and she was required to go only 1:2-| and 1:4-J. She has since been successful again in the A.R.C./Welcome Stakes. The Welcome Stakes was on November 7, so that Sheralee has had a month’s spell since she last raced. The letup did her good—she gave herself a rough time while travelling to Ellerslie for the Welcome Stakes—and she looked very bright again when she galloped at speed in her training on Sunday. ADELPHI’S RECORD Adelphi, naturally, has not been asked for pace again during the last two days but her trainer R. J. Wallace, who has already won the Avondale Stakes three times—with Count Filou (1957), Golden Fairy (1960), and Wimmera King (1961), yesterday pronounced her fit. Adelphi’s record is two firsts, a second, a third and a fourth in seven starts. She , is a dark brown filly, by Trie- i trac from Houston and Shera- I lee is a bay, by Sovereign I Edition from Tehrana. As far as barrier positions i are concerned, and one close ' to the inside is an advantage, 1 Sheralee (No. 3) and Adelphi j, (No. 1) are about equally |i placed. The next best to She-', ralee and Adelphi seem to be Beau Sovereign, Whistle J Green, Prince Amura, Tupelo , and Cuyler. Each has won!) already and Tupelo and;' Whistle Green, particularly, I - have managed several very I , worthwhile minor placings as I well. • Beau Sovereign, another good-looking member of the Sovereign Edition breed, won < in his very first attempt over five furlongs at Te Rapa on ' November 14. Whistle Green was successful a week before, at Te Rapa, and a week be- ■ fore that finished second behind Sheralee in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes. • ; Prince Amura has won twice, at Avondale and Te!' Rapa, Tupelo once, at Eilers- i{ lie and Cuyler once, at Te|i Rapa. ’ FIRST LEG Wiremu, which gave Kir-!' rama such a good race in the Waikato Guineas, would u encourage considerable optim-t ism regarding his Great Northern Derby prospects if he , won the first leg of the T.A.B. i double, the December Handi- 1 cap, and he seems certain to ' go very well. The December Handicap is ( pretty close to the Derby 1 distance, at 11 furlongs, so a { win on Wiremu’s account • would represent a very good i trial for Ellerslie. 1

Deft Touch and Allspice are beginning to look like

: good stayers and they might' ~ be the hardest for Wiremu to I beat. 1 Evenstead, in the form he ■ showed when second behind . Sharivari in an open six fur- , longs at Te Aroha last Satur--1 day, should win the second ■ leg, the Avondale Handicap. If he does not come up as well as he did at the week- ; end the finish might be be- : tween Sancho, Salima, ValI letta and Star Doctor.— The weather became overli cast yesterday afternoon but . with little prospect of sufficii ent rain to change the track : which was very firm.
