Five headmasters retire
Five primary school headmasters with a total of 197 years service between them were bidden farewell at a function organised by the North Canterbury Primary School Headmasters’ Association in the Horticultural Hall yesterday afternoon. . !
The president of the association (Mr E. A. D. Bodger) welcomed the guests. Those retiring are Messrs E. Armstrong, H. A. Barnett, G. A. Carswell, N. W. Gaufin, and K. W. Shirlaw. Mr Armstrong, headmaster! at Somerfield School, began his teaching career in Otago 34 years ago and taught at Wellington, Wanganui and Taranaki before coming, to Christchurch and teaching at Somerfield, Woolston, and Aorangi Road Schools. Mr Barnett began as a probationer at Beckenham in 1930 and taught at Lismore, Rangiora, Christchurch Normal, Clarkville and Wellington before becoming headmaster at Avonhead School. itioner in Southland in 1927 'and later taught at Nelson, i Dunedin, Wanganui and Taranaki. He became head
’ of Christchurch East School in 1964. Mr Gaudin began at Aranui School in 1924. He taught in the North Island then at Christchurch East, Denniston High School, Motueka, Reefton, and Palmerston South district high schools and finally Kaiapoi. JFrom 1949 to 1952 he was director of education on the Solomon Islands.. Mr Shirlaw, who has been teaching since 1928, when he began as a probationer at Greymouth, served at Waimairi, Lake Coleridge, Somerfield, Southland, Shirley Contributing, Phillipstown, Riccarton, Avonhead, and Heaton Intermediate, where he has been headmaster since 1962.
