Members of the Bumside Cricket Club can take some pride in the fact that they raised about $5O towards the cost of building a new pavilion at Bumside Park with their performances on Saturday.

A syndicate of three men who show a practical interest in sport has been engaged for some time in rasing money with raffles and other ventures to help sports bodies. Those which have benefited recently include the Garden City Golf Classic and marching girls’ teams. All three are members of the Bumside Cricket Club, and last Saturday the members of the three teams were sponsored to the extent of 10c a run.

There were bonuses—ss for a first-innings win, $lO for an outright win—and there was a proviso that there should be a deduction of $1 for every duck made by members of the three teams. But the players cunningly covered the cost of any ducks, with a collection, and it was as well that they did, for there were five of them in one innings. And although one game has yet to be decided, the club will benefit by $45 or $5O. The sponsoring syndicate hit on this novel idea because it wanted to involve all club members in the drive to build the pavilion.
