Deputy Town Clerk
Mr J. H. Gray, the deputytown clerk of Dunedin, has been appointed to a similar position in Christchurch. Mr Gray, who is 42, was chosen by the Christchurch City Council last evening from 23 applicants to succeed Mr A. T. Black, who is retiring after 40 years with the council. Mr Gray was educated at Auckland Grammar School and at the University of Auckland, and is qualified in accountancy. He has worked in local government administration since 1947 when he was assistant to the clerk of the Western Waiheke Roads Board. He was assistant town clerk and accountant of the One Tree Hill Borough Council before going to the New Lynn borough,! where he was town clerk,! treasurer and returningi officer in 1959. He was appointed to his | Dunedin position in 1968,! and is also chairman of
the Otago branch of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries. Mr Gray has had a distinguished career in the Territorial Army. He was commissioned in 1951 and is now a colonel and deputy-commander of the First Infantry Brigade Group. In 1964 he served in Kashmir at the senior New Zealand military observer in the United Nations observer group in India and Pakistan. 'He was appointed an honorary A.D.C. to the Gover-nor-General last year, and his military service has led to the award of the 0.8. E. and Efficiency Decoration and bar.
