Islands ship in dispute

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 7. The Islands freighter Jean Philippe, berthed at Auck- I land, is still the subject of a dispute over the payment of New Zealand ’ rates to Fijian seamen. The secretary of the Auckland branch of the Seamen’s Union (Mr L. Andersen) said today that the Reef Shipping Company, was running the vessel under a Fijian flag so that cheap labour could be employed. The master of the Jean • Philippe (Captain C. D. Duncan) said the Fijians were being paid four times the Fijian rate. Mr Andersen had no legal or moral right to interfere,! Captain Duncan said. But the president of the! Seamen’s Union (Mr W. Mar- ! tin) said today that he had; received a cable from the Fijian Seamens and Dockworkers’ Union authorising the New Zealand union to act for Fijian seamen, as it had done in the past.
