Schools’ yachting to C.B.H.S.

Christchurch Boys’ High School won the 1970 Peter Mander Trophy J.C. class intersecondary schools’ yachting championship when P. Minson and R. Stemmer sailed Mirage into third position in an extended final heat at Mount Pleasant yesterday.

During the first lap, nine of the 10 starters failed to sail around one of the marks, the then lowly-placed Linwood High School entry, Amigo (Miss G. Partington and P. Goulie), being the only boat to keep to the correct course and eventually finishing a hollow victor.

The remainder of the fleet continued on its way, and Quest IN. Jackson and G. Wright, Hagley High School) reached the line 3mln 27sec ahead of Mirage. On learning of their earlier error, the two crews turned about and sailed the course over again from the first leg. By this time Amigo, alter nearly withdrawing because of a broken tiller extension, had an advantage of nearly one hour. Quest was finally timed in 2hr 32mln 42sec after the start—48min 35sec behind Amigo—with Mirage coming home 3min iSsec later.

The points for third position, in comparison to Quest's second, were sufficient to give Mirage an over-all advantage of point for the series. Had Quest beaten Mirage for the two major placings, the two schools

would have shared the trophy with two firsts and two seconds apiece in the four races. The greater attention paid by Miss Partington and Goulie to the course Instructions lifted Amigo to third position. It had previously finished seventh and fourth in two of the heats and did not finish in the other. The second- Linwood High School boat, Kimlhla, was next, ahead of Shirley (Shirley Boys’ High School). E. L. Snowden (Elusive) outpaced several more hlghlvregarded rivals to gain line honours and easily win the P Class handicap. The Canterbury Tanner Cup representative, T. K. Stevens (Ladybird), was fourth to finish and sixth on corrected times.

Rana, the J. C. skippered by N. England, won the open handicap, also after leading the fleet
