The economy

Sir, —Driving 1500 miles in the last two weeks, I noticed the ever-increasing dependence of the economy on motor transport. In Auckland the harbour bridge is once more overloaded, and another, based on the Point Chevalier reef, will be necessary. After removing the bones of their pioneers from Grafton Gully, Aucklanders are preparing tunnels, etc., to improve access to and egress from their city’s centre. It is second only to Detroit for numbers of cars per head of population. How vulnerable New Zealand's increasing dependence could be was seen from the Aramoana, and the tanker Erne strikebound at its berth. That Marsden Point refinery should ever run dry, does not bear thinking about, and what if no components of spark plugs arrived in New Zealand for assembly, the only ones available? Under our economy, industry cannot manufacture a spark plug, only assemble one.—Yours, etc., A. B. CEDARIAN.
