‘Ten on Two’ Club member

Fireman J. A. Stevenson of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Brigade was yesterday admitted to the National Safety Association’s “Ten on Two” Club—a membership confined to persons who have saved themselves serious foot injuries by wearing protective footwear.

Mr Stevenson was presented with his membership certificate and a lapel badge by the Christchurch industrial safety adviser, Mr R. W. Walker (see picture). Since the “Ten on Two" Club was established about three years ago 27 persons have qualified for membership.

But the rate of serious foot injuries in New Zealand is about 3000 a year, Mr Walker said yesterday. In many cases, protective footwear could prevent the injuries. Mr Stevenson qualified for his membership on November 10, when he fell on his knees behind a fire-engine and had :

the five-ton vehicle pass over his foot. But Mr Stevenson was wearing the special steelreinforced protective knee

boots, of English manufacture, which are now issued badly damaged and its stain-less-steel sole protector

twisted, Mr Stevenson was saved permanent injury. “Without the boot I would really have been bad >Y hurt,” he said yesterday.
