Record horse and pony entries at Waimate show

Favourable conditions over the last few months were reflected in the livestock sections at the Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show at Kitchener Park, Waimate, on Saturday.

Conditions for Saturday’s show were ideal Fine, mild conditions attracted a large crowd, interest being maintained throughout with a good programme of ring events, along with a busy side-show section, and a wide range of trade exhibits.

Financially, it was a good day for the Waimate Agricultural and Pastoral Association, gate-takings amounting to $555, compared with $206 last year.

At 1356, total entries were 209 up on last year. The horse and pony section, with 616 entries, was a record. The sheep classes were generally well supported, several judges commenting on the rise in entries, compared with last year, when the district was emerging from its second successive drought With more than 70 entries, the Border Leicester classes were the largest of the sheep section. The well-known Oamaru breeder, J. A. Thompson, won the ram championship with a massive twotooth, while the reserve fell ’ to D. M. Elliot with a shorn hogget Competition was very good, the woolly ewe hogget class in particular, said the Border Leicester ewe judge, Mr B. D. Clinton (Darfield). Both the champion and • reserve champion came from the open class, the champion being from M. E. Gaffaney, and the reserve from F. J. Simpson. SOUTHDOWN SECTION The Southdown section drew 48 entries. The judge, Mr J. A. Hector (Invercargill), said he was pleased to see such an Improvement on last year in the num- j ber of entries; also in the i appearance of some new ] breeders. All over, he said, ] quality was quite encouraging. ] He made particular mention of ] the shorn ram hogget class, from 1 which he selected the ram cham- j pion. It was shown by S. E. ’ Bird, and had been bred by j the well-known district breeders, , J. C. Medlicott and Son. Although 50 entries were . shown in the Romney section, . the Gore judge (Mr W. R. Thayer), found some classes disappointing. Quite a few of the ram hoggets were carrying too. much wool around the head, and , the pairs and threes classes left something to be desired in that ; some of the entries were too short There were also shoul- ; der faults. Mr Thayer described R. G. t Lawrence’s champion ram as a ; good solid sheep, with plenty of substance. The reserve champion. a hogget from the same exhibitor, snowed good breed type, was sound on his legs, 1 and carried a good sire’s fleece. 1 The over-all standard of the | Hampshire Downs was good, but j the competition was limited, * said the judge, Mr D. S. Cros- 1 son (Methven). “I was looking for length, which I found, but J I consider that breeders could still watch the shoulders of their < sheep,” he said. , ■ Mr Crosson, who also judged ( the Dorset Downs, said that • competition in this section was J also restricted, but the majority j of the entries were up to stan- ; dard. The champion ewe would • be a top ewe in any company, ; and would show to advantage ■ in most shows. WOOL COMPETITION More than 60 entries were ‘ shown in the wool competition, ; and the judge, Mr M. A. J Cooper, said that, generally, weights were 21b to 31b heavier j than last year. Many fleeces were < of good show standard. The champion fleece was a Corriedale woolly hogget grown by N. W. Briggs (Totara Valley). The judge described it as of ; exceptional length, style, and : colour. The reserve champion • fleece was a crossbred shorn hogget grown by G. B. Arm- ; strong (Waihaorunga). In the light horse section, • the well-known campaigner, Nightcall, owned by A. L. and ■ Mrs Dunn (Eairlie) added another championship to his long list of successes. The same exhibitors also had some success with Te Huia, but the reserve championship went to the chestnut shown by Miss K. Waters and the Meares family. Until Miss Waters left for Britain several months ago, Knights Command was a regular competitor on the North Canterbury show circuit. ■ Before the judging of the : championship, Night Call had j won the classes for 15st hack i and best-paced hack, while Knight’s Command won the ] lady's hack class, and was second j in two other events. < CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS Sheep Border Leicester.—Ram: J.
