Cup stake $l00,000
Prize money for the Melbourne Cup next year will be $lOO,OOO and a $2OOO gold cup. The decision to increase the value of the race from $75,000 to $lOO,OOO was announced by the Victoria Racing Club at the weekend. The Melbourne Cup is easily the richest race in the Southern Hemisphere, and a race notable for the win-
ning record of New Zea-land-bred horses. In the last 18 years New Zealand-bred horses have won the cup 11 times. In that period they have earned $504,400 out of a total stake distribution of $827,000. Prize money for the Melbourne Cup has increased by 150 per cent in 10 years. In 1961 the stake was $40,000 and the trophy was valued at $l5OO.
