Red Carpet likely to win again
“The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. ’ Red Carpet, which has been raised 41b to 8-4 for his first-day success, looks likely to give a repeat performance in the Southland Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. i double on the second day of the Southland Racing Club’s meeting at Invercargill tomorrow.
Red Carpet, which had won the Ashburton Cup earlier in the season when he beat Sailing Home, showed
I something of that form when he beat Superspan and Bellaware in the Edgar Smythe ' Handicap on Saturday. 'i The field is not as strong tomorrow with Superspan and Somelight, two of the I form runners missing, and the rise of 41b should not stop ’ him. On Saturday he looked to have the measure of the field at the home turn but had to , work hard to get the better of the veteran, Superspan. Bellaware has been raised
lib and now comes in 31b better than Red Carpet. After some disappointing form Bellaware showed something of her best on the first day. She received a good run behind the leaders until the home turn, where she lost her position, and came with a determined run to get up for third. On that run she will be one of the stronger chances.
Governor General has yet to race up to the good staying form he showed last season, but with tffe benefit of some recent racing he looks to be on the way back. He made ground from the rear of the field for seventh on Saturday and the opposition is not as strong tomorrow. Dave’s Gift, fourth against the open sprinters on Satur-
day, may be ready to make a showing over some ground. The second leg of the double will be on the City Handicap. The smart three-year-old, Igloo, is selected from My Boa and Pole Star.
