Building ablaze

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. Fire badly damaged a three-storey former printing works building, now owned by New Zealand Breweries, Ltd, in O’Reilly Avenue, off Boulcott Street, Wellington, early today. An adjoining premises, owned by Vickery and Inkersell, Ltd, was threatened by the blaze and was saved from damage by firemen who played a nose on the roof and two on walls in a narrow alleyway separating the two buildings. . Firemen were called at 4.43 a.m. when the premises were well ablaze. Within minutes, four other engines had been called in, including three from the Thomdon, Newtown, and Northland stations. At the peak of the blaze, 37 firemen were battling the flames' with 10 hoses. It was under control in 30 minutes, but hoses were still being played on smouldering pockets at 10 a.m.

Wellington’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer (Mr D. A. Varley) said that fire-prevention officers were examining the building to determine the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started on the ground floor. '
