Plan to borrow teachers

fN.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. The Education Department has put a proposal to Victoria University of Wellington in an attempt to offset the shortage of secondary school science and mathematics teachers. At a council meeting of the university today members discussed a letter from the Director-General of Education (Dr K. J. Sheen) suggesting the possibility of junior university staff and PhJJ. students being borrowed for secondary teaching. Dr Sheen said he had recently discussed with some Government department heads the likelihood of some members of their staff being available in emergencies to do part-time teaching of mathematics and science. “Something similar may be possible for junior staff members of the university and Ph.D. students, provided their studies or their university duties are not impaired,” he said. The council decided to ask the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association for its opinion. Dr Sheen said in his letter that the proposal would be put to other universities.
