Golf Classic figure reaches $21,000

The improvement In the selling of sponsorships for the Christchurch Garden City Golf Classic recently had boosted the guaranteed income to something in excess of $21,000, the director of the sponsorship campaign for the organisers, the combined Canterbury Round Tables (Mr J. Sullivan) said yesterday.

“As long as another $2OOO or more can be found this week, the Sheltered Workshops should benefit by a minimum of $5OOO, provided that the weather is favourable,” he said. “Everything we find above the $2OOO will be of direct benefit to the workshops.” Mr Sullivan said that now 12 holes were sponsored for the classic, 65 patrons had been obtained, and the pro-am tournament was sponsored. Four holes have now been sponsored under the $25 share scheme—the second, fourth, seventh and fourteenth. Ashburton businessmen have been asked to share sponsorship of the thirteenth

In the meantime, shareholders are being sought for the remaining five holes. Shareholders so far found include: Avondale Upholstery, Christchurch Rubber Stamp Manufacturers, Ltd, Modern Engravers, Ltd, R. B. Ross Butchery, Aspell’s Eastern Tavern, Brewers’ Trading Company, Waitikiri Golf Club, Blue Star Taxis, Golf Section (two shares); Ascot Restaurant, C. W. Perry Esq., Baked Enamel Signs, Ltd (two shares); Saree Garments, Dingwall and Smith, Ltd, Anderson and Smith Upholsterers, Ltd; Douglas Miller, driving instructor; N.Z.T.S. Services, Canty,

Ltd, formerly NJZ. Towel Supplies, Ltd (two shares); and D. M. Bain and Sons, Ltd. Mr Sullivan learned some more good news yesterday—■he has been nominated by the Christchurch Round Table No. 1 as its representative in “The Press” pro-am. He plays at Templeton, and is on a handicap of 20. Ute Canterbury area council of Round Tables has also offered $2OO patronage. Two other names added to the pro-am list yesterday were those of the Can-

terbury Rugby half-back and vice-captain, L. J. Davis, and the Canterbury under 17 golf champion, G. Chaffey. Davis, who was the provincial intermediate golf champion last year, was nominated by a new patron sponsor, R. G. Robinson, Ltd, and Chaffey was nominated by the Christchurch Battery Company. Three more Australian professionals have joined the field for the 72-hole classic. They are R. Shaw, J. Boyle, and J. Smart.
