Games symbol competition

Approval for a New Zealand-wide competition to be held among professional designers to find a symbol for the 1974 Commonwealth Games was given at the first meeting last evening of the Games organising committee.

The chairman (Mr R. S. Scott) who is also convener of the design sub-committee, said it was important that the design have a professional and sophisticated touch and this objective should be realised by limiting the competition to members of the Design Institute. Only about 30 or 40 people would be eligible, he added. Each entrant in the competition, which will begin next month and run until the end of January, will be provided with a circular setting out conditions and specifications, one of the most- important, perhaps, being that the symbol should incorporate the spirit of New Zealand, Christchurch and the Games. $350 PRIZE The winner of the contest would receive $350, which had been given by a Christchurch firm, said Mr Scott.

The meeting dwelt mainly on the organisation structure of the committee, the composition of its sub-commit-tees, and how they will work once they are functioning. A constitution, already approved by the New Zealand Olympic and British Commonwealth Gaines Association, was studied and procedure for future meetings decided. The secretary (Mr N. B. Ullrich) said that in accordance with the practice since 1950 the organising body would become a limited company. One of the advantages of this, said Mr Scott, would be legal safeguards against the use of the company’s name—the 10th Commonwealth Games, Ltd—by any commercial enterprise. Mr M. F. Hunter, convener

of the finance sub-committee,, said that many promises of' money had been made and about $B5O had been re- ■ ceived. The major appeal' would begin in earnest about the beginning of next March,’’ and go public early in April.' To a question by Mr D?B. Rich, Mr Hunter—with* support from other members . —said that the hiring of a professional fund - raising firm was considered essential to the success of a campaign on the scope envisaged. The firm was hired earlier this year by Commonwealth, Games Promotion, subject Christchurch winning the - * 1974 vote at Edinburgh in, July.x
