HOOD SHINES AS SPRINT CYCLIST

A. J. Hood, for long accepted as one of New Zealand’s better pursuit riders, showed yesterday at Denton Park that he has a handy sprint as well. The occasion was a special open meeting for Canterbury track cyclists, and twice Hood showed surprising strength and speed for this early in the reason The moot notable occasion was in the feature race, the five-mile scratch, when it so evolved that Hood, B. G. Stockwell, and M. W. Lltolff were left to fight out the finish. Lltolff is an acknowledged sprinter, and Stockwell has a good finish to him, too, but although! Hood led out—with Stockwell on his wheel—neither could come over him In the straight.

Hood had given a foretaste of this sort of form in a handicap race a little earlier. Two you niters, P. T. Radbumd and A. Stollman, were comfortably clear In first and second places, but Hood again had too much strength for the top sprinters. Lltolff won the sprint series, as expected, but was given a fright by R. K Anderson, who has still not fulfilled his early promise. Anderson was only matched by Lltolff on the line, when the Canterbury champion came on the outside to win by a tyre. A new innovation, the fourman station pursuits, was tried for the first time, over two miles and there were good efforts by C. J. Tabak and A. J. Stewart, and a close tussle between Stockwell and Hood. Results: AMATEUR Scratch.—soo metres sprint: T. R. Weir beat P. L. Paviell and A. Stollman 13.4 sec. J. Schriek beat P. D. Brydon and K. F.
