De Thier wins all heats

The former New Zealand title-holder, B. G. de Thier, left no doubts about his supremacy over other Finn class yachtsmen in the province when he won all four of the Avalyn Trophy (Canterbury championship) heats at Charteris Bay during the week-end.

However, de Thier was challenged quite strongly by D. Bryson, B. E. Treleaven and, in the first race, P. F. Pritchett, and it was only in the final heat yesterday afternoon that he was able to slip away from the rest of the fleet for an effortless victory. Bryson displayed considerable and impressive improvement with his new Pederson rig, earning second position over-all with two seconds and two thirds in the series. He appeared the likely winner of the third heat, but was caught and passed by de Thier over the last 100yds.

After a most disappointing twelfth in the opening event, Treleaven changed back to his old sail and progressed to two thirds and a second in the succeeding races. This left him in third place in the final assessment, ahead of J. S. Wearn, W. H. Beere, and B. Winters.

It was not until just before the last mark that de Thier relieved Pritchett of the initiaive in the opening race. The two leaders then settled down to a keen tacking duel over the final stages, de Thier’s more extensive championship experience assisting him to build a 17sec advantage. De Thier and Winters were recalled at the start of the second race on Saturday afternoon, but this did not deter the eventual winner. De Thier sailed through the fleet of 17 yachts to beat Bryson by nearly 90sec, with Treleaven a close third. Winters also recovered well to reach sixth place. Bryson and Treleaven were the early leaders in the third heat, with de Thier comfortably third at the top mark. Bryson headed Treleaven and only just failed to keep de Thier at bay, being forced to concede defeat by 29sec. Treleaven was another llsec back. LAST RACE

With the championship already decided, de Thier slowly worked out to a useful initial lead in the last race, increasing his advantage throughout to win by just over 2min. Treleaven held a similar lead over Bryson, but there was a tense contest for the next five platings with Wearn. Winters, E. Cave, Beere, and F. Dickson separated by only Msec

The outstanding form shown by de Thier at the venue, where he won his first national title four years ago, has brought him into even stronger contention for the next New Zealand series, to be held at Charteris Bay in January. Although not able to match de

Thier’s high level of consistency and performance, Bryson, Tre leaven, Wearn, Beer, and Win ters—in the first outing this sea son—should be quite satisfied with their results. The improved facilities at the Charteris Bay club indicated that there should be few problems encountered in handling the fleet of about 40 boats which is expected to compete for na tional honours. Results.— Canterbury Finn Championship First Race.—B. G. de Thier (Finnsarby) 1, P. F. Pritchett (Loafin Too) 2, D. Bryson (Findetta) 3, W. H. Beere (Finntastic) 4, J. S. Wearn (Jolifin) 5. Hobden (Nereid, Moth), H. H. Kingham and. A. Edgerton (Pas de Deux, Sunburst), and D. Hobson (Zenith, O.K. dinghy). J.
