RACING General Boy picked for Westland today

General Boy may avenge a head defeat on Saturday by Gay Doctor by winning the V. P. Bernard Handicap, first leg of the Westland Racing Club’s T.A.B. double today.

General Boy will meet Gay Doctor on 51b better terms today, which could giv? uim a slight edge. At all events, it is a race in which South Canterbury will be strongly represented.

The Riccarton-trained Elvin Spark had none the best of it in the running when third behind Gay Doctor and General Boy on Saturday. He was making good progress in his run from well back in the field when a gap closed on him. Only for that, the heavy backing which made him favourite in his openclass debut might not have been misplaced.

G. W. Mein, who rode three winners on Saturday, will again ride Gay Doctor today. D. Tucker will be on General Boy. Magic Man, from Riccarton, holds a bright chance of winning the Woodstock Hack Handicap, the second leg of today’s T.A.B. double. He has shown his best form at a middle distance, yet was equal to the task of winning at a mile for C. McDonald’s stable on Saturday. Today, he will be racing at a mile and a quarter, and might be too strong for Irish Hope, which ran him to half a length on Saturday.

Jubal and Strad should be a strong combination for the on-course double, which is on the Whataroa Stakes and the Arahura Hack Handicap. Strad is also an acceptor for the last race on the card —and if he is taken out of the Arahura Hack Handicap, the prospects of Japita and Honey Carlyle will brighten. Selections:— HJO p.m-—Whiter©!
