Bridge players raise $4OO

Members of the Christchurch Contract Bridge Club raised $4OO this week at a function held to raise funds for the Girl Guides’ Association’s new training centre.

A committee of five members of the club organised a one-day bridge tournament and incorporated a luncheon and mannequin parade, inviting members to attend at $1.50 a head. A member of the committee, Mrs F. W. Brandt, said

yesterday that the function had been a great success. Bridge players had travelled from Ashburton to attend. Mrs Brandt said the degree of response had been unexpected. “We had catered for 200, but many more bridge players had applied, and unfortunately we had to turn them away,” she said. Some extra people had attended the mannequin parade which was organised by Mrs Nola Kellaher, of Christchurch. Mrs Brandt said that all the basic foods had been donated by city stores, including a supply of sherry. PREPARED FOOD The food was prepared by the committee members, who were Mesdames W. Barlow, K. Wardell, E. G. Young, D. Heaps, and Mrs Brandt. Two members from the Girl Guides’ Association also assisted.

The funds would go to assist the Girl Guides’ Association’s new training centre to be erected at Cashmere on the grounds and residence donated by Mrs J. CracroftWilson in 1958.
