Irving, Pulley new additions

Hie Lancaster Park oS-spinner, B. G Irving, and the East Christchurch - Shirley medium-pace bowler, G. D. V. Pulley, have been added to the Canterbury Plunket Shield squad, following the withdrawal of R. C. Motz.

Irving has previously played for Canterbury in 1962-63 and 1963-64, but Pulley is in the squad for the first time, probably

through some fine performances this season. He has taken 16 wickets at very moderate cost

Irving had been considered unlucky not to be in past and present Plunket Shield squads after his performances in his first season in the Canterbury team when he took 14 wickets at an average of only 17.5. He has been a most consistent bowler in club cricket since his first season, in 1955-56.

At the end of last season, he had 476 wickets at an average of 16.2, and is well on the way to reaching the 500-wicket target this season. Three times be has taken 50 wickets or more in a season and five times he has taken 10 or more in a match.

Pulley is an accurate bowler whose main weapon

is an in-swinger. He can bowl for long periods and allows batsmen little latitude. Until the end of last season he had taken 65 wickets in club cricket and with the 16 he has already this year, he should reach the 100 milestone this season.
