Pennant win to Union four

Spurred on by its outstanding stroke, R. Satherley, over the final 200 metres, the Union No. 1 crew narrowly beat its rivials in the final of the senior fours—the feature event of the first meeting of the 1969-70 Kerrs Reach pennant rowing series yesterday.

In the most even contest oi the day. Union No. 1 beat Can terbury No. 1 by a third of a boat’s length, while Canterbun No. 2 was about 2ft further back third. The closeness of the finish wai reflected in the official timet given, which were 6min 33.45ec 6min 34.45ec and 6min 34.75e< respectively. Uniqn No. 1, in the second lane, was trailing Canterbury No. 1, in lane 1, as the boats approached the bend before straightening up for the run home. However, the crew responded magnificently to Satherley’s call for a faster stroke ratUnion No. 1 had been well beaten into second place in the event’s second heat by Canterbury No. 2. The Union No. 1 boat had earlier beaten Canterbury No. 2 in the first heat, which gained the right of inclusion in the final with the fastest time of the second place-getters.
