Annan again breaks stock rod record

? The eight-lap, super-modified stock rod record was broken for the second successive week by the experienced driver, P. Annan, during a lively meeting at the Templeton Speedway on Saturday night.

Driving his Ford Mus-tang-powered machine with great verve, he won the eight-lap . feature race in the exceptional time of 2min 45.25ec four tenths of a second inside the record he set on the opening night seven days before. Just for good measure, he broke the lap record for his •” class twice before receiving the chequered flag. Early in the race he was clocked at 19.4 secs, twotenths of a second inside the lap record he established in C January last season, before turning in a lap in the remarkable time of 19.3 sec. This time was only a tenth . - of a second slower than R. T. Hall’s midget car lap record. Midget cars have long been regarded as the fastest four- .. wheeled machines in New Zealand speedway, but if . Annan’s performances are any indication their reign .-might be nearing the end. 7 Annan’s new record for eight laps was substantially - faster than the time set over • the same distance by E. j Murray in the midget car section on Saturday. Murray ’ won the midget car scratch ' race in 2min 46.55ec after i weaving his way through the ] field from a second row grid j position. Once again he had to work hard to get past the ; former New Zealand solo motor-cycle champion, M. i Burt, who led the race for ' most of the distance with a < great display of forceful < driving. : REMARKABLE SKILL I Burt, who retired from motor- I cycle speedway competition after 1 a serious crash in England two : seasons ago. showed remarkable S skill for a competitor in only s his second meeting of midget car ; competition. He started the night s with a fine win in the opening S six-lap handicap, and followed It I with a second to Murray in the 1 eight-lap handicap before tak- I ing second place in the scratch fi race. In the eight-lap handicap, Murray was in outstanding form, < bursting through from the rear I of the field to win in 2min 2 49.8 sec. On his way to victory S he recorded a fast lap in 19.4ecc. t The defendnig South Island 1 three-quarter midget champion, 1 D. Jones, finished out of a place I in the eight-lap race for points. 1 Honour* were taken by R. Burt, 2 a former champion, who led most of the way in Convincing style, c A. Palmer, the winner of the J first round, finished second but t was later relegated one place c behind D Richens for barging. 5

, R. Wright scored an impressive win in the solo motor-cycle J scratch race in the good time of 81.2 sec. T. Black, the reignI ing South Island champion, ap- , piled some strong pressure beI- fore retiring on the final lap while still in a challenging position. - Worthy of special mention was I the showing of last season’s top novice, S. Foster, who fell on 1 the final lap while holding third place. He was put into the field t at the eleventh hour as a replacement, and until his fall, was right up with the leaders. Wright also won both his han- ! dicap events from the back . mark, to retain his unbeaten record for the season. ! The promising young rider, K. Burt, was fortunate to escape . serious injury when he somer- ’ saulted 30ft through the air be- • fore crashing into the safety ■ fence during a handicap event. : Burt collided with the rear wheel ' of the scrambles champion, G. I Stapleton, while jockeying for . position on the first bend? He was taken from the track by ambulance, but recovered in the I pits.
