Courtenay Show gate-takings double

With the best gate takings for several years—s6o6—the organisers of the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association had every reason to feel pleased with the success of the annual show at Kirwee on Saturday. Last year, because the day was wet, the gate amounted to only $350. The increased takings on Saturday reflected a larger attendance by local residents and visitors, since admittance charges were the same as last year.

Although the total number of entries were down a little on last year, horse events continued dominant in the show. Visitors were welcomed to the show by the association’s president (Mr W. P. Stott). The member of Parliament for Ashburton (Mr C. C. A. McLachlan) congratulated winners and exhibitors. As member of Parliament representing a large rural constituency who attended several such shows, he was always impressed with the way stock at Courtenay Show compared more than favourably with any in the Dominion, he said. The “Pastoral Queen” contest, organised by the Darfield Country Girls* Club, was won by Suzanne Stott, aged 22, daughter of this year’s president of the Courtenay A. and P. Association (Mr W. P. Stott). The contest drew five entries. Miss Stott only recently returned from a working holiday in Australia. The judges of the saddle ponies and riding class. Mr C. T. Burrows and Mrs N. T. Judson, expressed pleasure at the overall standard. Mr Burrows said that the standard was equal to any saddle-pony class anywhere in New Zealand. He was particularly impressed with the best-mannered pony class. Exhibitors in the three-pony team events were to be congratulated on their fine turn out Any one team could creditably have taken the red ribbon, he said. Mrs Judson said that she was pleased with the small pony classes. The riding throughout was of a high standard, she said. Mr J. Stevenson, judge of the light horses, said that he had judged a lot of exceptionally good ponies. While there was a tail-end, the top ponies possessed good bone and leg structure.
