More items exempted

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 22. Full details of the 193 items, valued at $25 million, which it is proposed to exempt from import licensing from July 1, 1971, were released by the Minister of Customs (Mr Adams-Schnei-der).

The exemptions, he said, would be subject to normal procedures whereby local manufacturers of similar goods would have an opportunity to make submissions, should they feel the need for some alternative form of protection.

“Two-thirds of all private imports are already exempt from import licensing,” the Minister said. "This is the sixth major list of exemptions since March, 1968.” Included in the list of exemption proposals, to be gazetted next Thursday, are certain types of rum, brandy and whisky; contraceptives; cartridge ink refills for fountain pens; certain fishing equipment; firemen’s helmets; coin; padlocks; escalators; nuclear reactors; electric record players; and a long list of various types of technical equipment and machinery.
