Petrol tax
Sir,—Why should the views of the people be ignored on this issue? Is it because if the bill were to be referred to the Local Bills Committee some valuable contribution might be made which did not have its origin in limited local authority thinking? Too often the ratepayer who does not bow down to the statements of some city mayor or county chairman is the subject of a personal attack. Local authorities should not be authorised to levy a petrol tax or any other form of tax until they have been effectively reformed. Their senseless multiplicity in both the territorial and ad hoc fields is a matter of concern and there is the present dangerous trend of territorial local bodies nominating their own members to , other bodies. What contribution can any local authority member make to as many as four or five other statutory bodies? Which one is master? Who is being served? Self? — Yours, etc., DEMOCRACY. November 22, 1970.
