“Southerner” in jeopardy
(N.X. treat Aaaociation) UMARU, Nov. 22. Industrial trouble might delay the start of the “Southerner” service on the South Island main rail trunk, the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) said in Timaru on Friday. The question to be solved is whether hostesses will be salaried and members of the Railways Officers’ Institute,, or paid hourly and belong to the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. “There is considerable argument about this, and I fear the train might not run,” Mr Gordon said. A trial run of the “Southerner” next Thursday was also almost certain to be cancelled because of the dispute. The service was planned to begin on December 1.
