Restoration appeal
More than $l7O was given at the week-end towards the restoration of the south wall of the Holy Trinity Church at Lyttelton. Hie money was given after the launching of a restoration appeal at the Canterbury Society Arts gallery on Saturday evening. The Lyttelton Lions Club opened the appeal with a gift of $75 and about $lOO has since been collected. A newly-formed restoration committee hopes to raise $2OOO for the restoration of the wall, which holds paintings by Canon Coates. Several of these wall paintings are in a poor state. Total restoration is expected to cost $4OOO.
The Canterbury regional committee of the National Historic Places Trust has approved a report and cost estimate of the reconstruction
work, and has passed it to the national executive.
Saturday evening’s function was organised by the New Zealand Water Colourists’ Society, and was opened by the president of the Canterbury Society of Arts (Mr J. Oakley). Telegrams from the Prime Minister (Sir Keith Holyoake) and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) were read.
A special service to arouse interest in the Church was conducted yesterday morning. About 50 attended.
