CYCLING UPSET
Rain again mars races For the second successive week, rain ruined the track cycling meeting at English Park. Last week, events were washed out completely; on Thursday night, they were cancelled after the fifth race. Front markers dominated the three heats of the amateur open half-mile handicap and the final was no exception. K. Grogan, riding off 90 yards, beating A. Stewart (100) by a length in the final sprint. An interesting rider in the heats was the Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, B. G. Stockwell, who found his handicap too severe on the night. In the novice races, G. Sword, P. Court and I. Stace impressed by the manner In which they won their respective grades. The meeting will now be held next Tuesday, with additional races to provide a full programme. Results were:—-Open.—Half-mile handicap— First heat: G. Smith (75) 1, M. Litolff (5) 2, L. Vette (65) 3. Time: 61.5. Second heat: P. Radburnd (110) 1, D. Dixon (80) 2, A. Stewart (100) 3. Time: 55.8. Third heat: J. Sehriek (45) 1, M. Payne (55) 2, K. Grogan (90) 3. Time: 57.8. Final: Grogan 1, Steward 2, Radburnd 3. Time: 57.6. Novice.—A grade-—Half-mile handicap: P. Court (35) 1, P. Basher (50) 2, J. Sullivan (5) 3. Time: 63.1. A Grade—Half-mile scratch: G. Sword 1, T. Paviell 2, J. Fowler 3. Time: 68.9. C Grade —Half-mile handicap: I. Stace (55) 1, I. Steele (5) 2, G. Sibley (30) 3. Time: 66.4.
