Contest begins

The search for “Miss Canterbury, 1971” has begun. Ten ‘entries have already been received for the contest, which offers place-getters prizes worth more than $lOOO. The judges will be looking for girls who are attractive, well groomed, mature, intelligent, and have plenty of personality. This year, as for the last seven, the contest will be run by the Christchurch Jaycee chapter, and the contest committee is going all out to ensure “Miss Canterbury, 1971,” is a resounding suecess, Mr I. Harrison, the convener of the committee, said Jaycee chapters throughout Canterbury were being approached with the view of running a contest that is truly provincial in every aspect Numerous promotions will lead up to a “Miss Canterbury Fortnight” climaxed by the grand final at the Winter Garden on Saturday, Februafln the first week of this fortnight, provincial and suburban finalists will be announced and introduced to the public at various points round Christchurch. In conjunction with the main contest there will be “Miss Photogenic" and “Miss Personality” contests, to be judged respectively by the public and the entrants themselves. Mr Harrison said Christchurch Jaycees took over the running or the contest in 1964 as an ideal way of publicising Canterbury, and as an effective means of raising funds for charity. Since then more than $5OOO has been raised and donated various worthy charities in the area. The winners of the contest since 1964 are: Misses Helen Iggo, Ruby Foley, Michelle Armstrong, Pamela McLeod, Aroha Manawatu, Jan Shaw, and Shona Lewis. The main conditions covering the “Miss Canterbury” contest are that girls must be aged between 18 and 27, single, and must not be previous winners of the contest Inquiries can be made to Mrs P.
