SOFTBALL TOUR
Match with Wanganui
The Canterbury softball team’s North Island tour this week-end now ' includes a game tonight against Wanganui, which has been ranked higher than Canterbury in recent national Beatty Cup tournaments.
Wanganui did not play in last season’s tournament at Invercargill and so is not eligible for inclusion among the seven teams, on of which is Canterbury, to compete in New Zealand’s classic softball event at Wellington next month. The former southern zone selection, Canterbury and Kaiapoi utility player, R. Mi Bennett, will be playing for Wanganui. The New Zealand representative third baseman of the 1966 to 1968 world championship team, C. Phillips, will captain the strong Wanganui side, while another former international, Mr D. Brewer, is the team’s coach.
The rearrangement of games means that Canterbury will play Manawatu this afternoon and tomorow morning and Hawke’s Bay tomorrow afternoon.
