Dame Flora MacLeod
Dame Flora MacLeod, chief of the MacLeod clan was wel, corned to Christchurch on Thursday evening at a gathering of all local clans arranged by the Christchurch Scottish Society. The gathering, the society’s sixty-eighth, was held in its hall in Caledonian Road and attracted a crowd of 300. The welcoming address was given by the local chief of the clan (Mr W. H. Mathison), after the official party had been piped in by PipeMajor G. Burrows. The guests of honour included the senior chieftain (Mr A. Miller)' and Mrs Miller, Sir George Manning and Lady Manning, Mrs G. Burns, Miss N. Northcroft, and Mrs W. S. Mac Gibbon, the local president of the clan. Mr T. A. Gordon represented the House of Gordon. Other organisations represented included St Andrew’s College, the Buchanan clan, the Christchurch Scottish Club, the Wahine Club, and the Methven Caledonian Society. In her address, Dame Flora MacLeod, who is aged 92, asked all members, especially the young, to heed the clan’s motto, “Hold fast.” The gathering was also the society’s annual clans concert. Solos were sung by Mr and Mrs W. Hamilton Miss Margaret Elvines, and Mr W. Williams. Musical items were played by Mr R.. McDonald and Mrs W. E. Olds. The society’s dancing classes performed.
