Successor to Macleod
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 20. The British Conservative Party has retained the Parliamentary seat made vacant by the death of the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr lain Macleod. But Mr Macleod’s General Election majority in the blue ribbon electorate of Enfield West was reduced from 11,962 to 8279 in yesterday's by-election. The result shows a 0.3 per cent swing to the Opposition Labour Party, but was noteworthy for the substantially reduced turn-out of voters. The man who takes over from Mr Macleod is Mr Cecil Parkinson, aged 39, an accountant and businessman. The by-election was the second since the June General Election. The Conservative Party has retained its hold on both electorates, to preserve its original 31 majority in the House of Commons. The present state of the parties is: Conservatives, 330; Labour, 287; Liberal, six; others, including the Speaker, seven.
