Step towards ownership

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Nov. 19. The Australian Council of Trade Unions has began a series of moves to acquire the ownership and management of a chain of discount stores throughout the country. Initially, and without cost, -the A.C.T.U. will become a full partner in the discount store of Bourke’s Melbourne Pty Ltd, and at the end of five years, it will be able to purchase out of profits, full ownership of the business. • The president of the A.C.T.U. (Mr Bob Hawke) said that it was not the council’s idea to confine the business to Melbourne. “As we are a national body, we would have to look at the thing in a national way." he said. “The A.C.T.U. has been able only to talk about consumer protection and price control, but now we aim to do something about it.”
