Majority by magic

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) AVELLINO (Italy), Nov. 19. The Mayor of Montefredane has succeeded in getting his tough budget approved by the town council, after spending the night practising magic against the Opposition.

Mr Antonio Battista sacrificed a black hen, called on friendly spirits—and got his majority.

“Once more magic has proved me right,” he said jubilantly last night. His troubles had begun when three councillors switched their allegiance from the Independent majority to the Christian Party, leaving Mr Battista’s faction in a minority of seven to eight. Last night Mr Battista had his budget approved by seven votes to nil, the Opposition failing to put in an appearance.

Mr Battista, who has been a professional magician for 11 years, celebrated his victory with a fireworks display.
